ITFC Portman Road Signage

Uppa Towen!

At Hudson Group, we have always been proud to be ITFC’s signage supplier. Here, we reveal how our signage has helped the Tractor Boys return to the Premier League in style.

Helping ITFC Arrive in the Premier League in Style

As the 2023/24 football season drew to a close, we were all glued to the edge of our seats. With our fingers crossed, we dreamt of Ipswich Town returning to English football’s top flight for the first time since 2002.

When Kieran McKenna’s team finally secured promotion for the second season in a row, it set in motion a huge project to bring the Portman Road stadium up to Premier League standards. And not for the first time, Hudson Group was thrilled to play its part.

Working to tight deadlines, we created new signage around the stadium and at the training ground. Here, we share the results of our work, which supporters will already have seen at the first two home games against Liverpool and Fulham.

Transforming Portman Road

In a recent blog post, we charted some of our previous work at Portman Road, but we were delighted when the club asked us back to do more work this summer.

Sales Director Tom Wright explained: “We were swamped over a six-week period, designing, manufacturing and installing all things related to ITFC signage.”

This work helped take Portman Road to the next level, mirroring the club’s on-field achievements (more on this shortly). Everyone agrees the ground now reflects the club's recent rise, ensuring Portman Road is an iconic venue for home and visiting supporters in the world’s most competitive league.

Our work includes:

✓A fully illuminated set of giant letters and ITFC crests on the back of the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand.

✓The re branding of the stand to incorporate the naming rights for the University of Suffolk.

✓Updating the North Stand pillars to include memories of our back-to-back promotions to the English Premier League.

✓58 new outer stadium perimeter panels with players, memories, and pictures of our famous sponsor and shareholder, Ed Sheeran, celebrating with the players and fans.

✓ The players’ tunnel has also been completely overhauled, showing the EPL that Town mean business on matchday! Images of this will follow soon…

Portman Road has been the home of Ipswich Town FC since 1884 and is one of our town’s most iconic landmarks. At Hudson Group, we’re thrilled to be the sign manufacturer and supplier for our local team, and we’re proud to be part of the journey of taking our grand old home to new heights.

Tom added: "Due to the uncertainty of not knowing whether the club would get promoted until the last game of the season, we are very proud to be a tiny part of what has been achieved at Portman Road in such a short time. The stadium and the training ground look amazing, and we always like to think our work is the icing on the cake.”

This video of the project confirms that the Hudson Group’s work on the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand was carried out with military precision.

Town’s Premier League journey is underway

On the field, Town have achieved incredible success under Kieran McKenna, rising to the English Premier League immediately after clinching promotion to the English Championship.

Despite a sticky run of fixtures to start the campaign, the Tractor Boys have shown they can compete at this level, earning respectable points against Fulham and Brighton at the time of writing.

Many supporters – the Hudson Group included – feel McKenna has what it takes to guide Ipswich to safety and secure a second season in the top flight.

We’ve been working with Town for years, including the not-too-distant past when the club was floundering in League One, struggling to compete with some of the smallest clubs in the English football pyramid.

Seeing Liverpool visit Portman Road on the first day of this season showed just how far our hometown club has come, and we couldn’t be prouder to be involved, having been with the club through the bad times and the good.

Like all other Town fans, we’re excited about the rest of the English Premier League campaign and will cheer on the boys at Portman Road throughout.

We hope to share more developments from the ITFC training centre and other related projects in upcoming blog posts. Check out our recent news stories for more from Hudson Group and ITFC.
